Marjorie Ames - 2016 Biography

(Family)

I've been married to David 26 years, and will enjoy our 27th on Valentine's Day. One son, Christopher, one granddaughter Sarah Lee-Ann who turned 21 in June. No great grand kids yet. Our best (Cat) friends, Bonkie & Sneekie died several years ago, they were 18 and 20 years respectfully.

(Work)

I took early retirement at 62. I love scouring Goodwill, garage sales and other thrift stores for roosters, martini glasses and cookbooks. My favorite authors are Dan Brown, David Baldacci, Preston & Lincoln, Grisham, and Patterson. Gardening is another hobby. I'm happiest in the kitchen trying out new recipes from my favorite Chef's: Julia Child, Marcella Hazan, Jacques Pepin, etc. We live between Fort Myers and Naples, Florida. We do day trips to Captiva and Sanibel Islands often taking half-day cruises around some of the other islands. I am an avid Masterpiece fan and loved Downton Abby. I am currently watching all episodes of Falcon Crest which ran from 1981-89. Always interest in new wines and of course martinis. I love Star Trek and all 007 Bond movies (can't wait to see who will replace Daniel Craig?)

(Other things)

1952 we all started school for the first time with Mrs. Menzies, the sweetest teacher.  Remember how we'd get our little rugs out of the cupboard and take our naps on the floor? The girls played with dolls. Joe Tebo told me once what the boys did, but I forgot. Lincoln Logs and erector sets maybe? In 3rd grade, Mrs. Henderson would lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Afternoon snacks of milk and graham crackers. Playing with Gail and Penny at recess time, and playing "Wild Horses" with Mary Jane (we will miss her).

I loved Mrs. Barry in 4th. We learned to make change at the cardboard replica of a checkout stand using fake boxes of food. Our first book report, mine was "Stormy," about a foal born during a storm. Remember when we made Indian costumes and our class had its picture in the paper? My favorite class was gym. Sally Drinkert and I were the only two who could climb the rope. Playing dodge ball and watching the boys play on the other side of the gym. Sally, remember those blue gym socks? Being excused from taking a shower with a note from our mother. Mrs. Skitka was a scream.

I especially loved being in  the Gaylord High Marching Band, doing those crazy marching formations during footballs games freezing our fingers to the bone, playing in the "Pep Band" during the basketball games at the old gym, and riding the bus to other schools to compete in regional concert competitions.

Nothing gave me greater joy than spending the weekends with Gail out at her farm. We had more fun riding around the county on her horse "Babe." Spending nights up in the hay loft, swimming in Lake 27, riding all the way to the Flemming Dairy farm. I'll miss Gail (so sad I never got a chance to see her again since her passing last year).

My other best friend Penny and I had many special times together. Her mother and my mother were both war brides from England after WWII ended. So sad I didn't make it to the Golden 50! See you all in 2020!!
